Boyan Slat on JRE #1402
Drag the mouse to control the tuna to eat smaller fish in order to grow rapidly. Try to avoid bigger fish! Apr 04, 2018 Drag the mouse to control the tuna to eat smaller fish in order to grow rapidly. Try to avoid bigger fish!
Boyan Slat is an inventor, entrepreneur, and former aerospace engineering student. He is the founder of The Ocean Cleanup organization. Boyan had the idea to clean up the plastic in the pacific ocean at the age of 16. Now at the age of 25, they have a prototype machine that has removed two cargo containers of plastic from the sea. There is still much work to be done, but the fact that's he's even tried and come this far is impressive. He's not stopping there either. The team is also working on limiting plastic that enters the ocean for the rivers as well by capturing the plastic at its source.
One topic that had me fire up was people who are detractors. They sit on the sidelines and wonder why waste money on a futile project? Or at its worst hope, it fails. To sit on your hands is utterly absurd, regardless of your beliefs, sometimes it is daring to try that gets you much further than we ever thought possible. I truly believe if we all tried to make the world a little better than when we came into it, we could inch our way closer to healthier humans, society, and planet. I'm not saying everyone needs to be grandiose and solve world hunger, but if you aim to make a positive impact on those around you, then you've won.
Your 2020 Burnout Recovery Plan by Florence Williams | The Outside Online
Feeding frenzy and meat shield. 'We don't just have fear of missing out, we have dread of slacking off. It's telling that so many of us push to the edge of our endurance in order to feel good about ourselves. We've equated recreational difficulty and social-media posts of summits with self-worth, and that's a precarious and unsustainable place to be.' - Florence Williams
This piece hit home for me. I spent most of 2019 learning how to disconnect myself from wanting to do work. There will always be work that needs to be done, but sometimes the best thing to do is just of the world. Go to yoga, get food with friends, laugh, and be merry. For me finding yoga as a way to escape and leave the rest of my day behind has been immeasurably helpful. During the summer, going on runs at local nature preserve was also beneficial in getting out of the world of silicon and bits. https://cleverblast174.weebly.com/blog/feeding-frenzy-vultures. Sometimes the best course of action is to do the 'least' optimal thing logically speaking. Sometimes we need a reminder that it's OK just to be.
What Are Adaptogens and Why Are People Taking Them? by Jamie Ducharme | Time
'When we exercise, it's a stress on our body. But as we continue to train and exercise, our body becomes better at dealing with the stress of it, so we no longer get as tired or as high a heart rate. When you take adaptogens you're training your body to handle the effects of stress.' - Dr. Brenda Powell
If you've been following Feeding Curiosity or know me personally, I'm a huge fan of Four Sigmatic, especially their elixirs. I remember specific research on the different kinds of mushrooms they sell and reported effects, but I've recently been trying to understand this category of supplements. The host of positive benefits is entirely unheard of, and without addictive properties, think of what it feels like not to have a daily dose of caffeine. The category is broadly described as adaptogens, and this Time article does well in explaining the ten thousand foot view. If you want to learn more about the science, I found this paper Effects of Adaptogens on the Central Nervous System and the Molecular Mechanisms Associated with Their Stress—Protective Activity
I've listened much of Jordan Peterson's work from podcasts to YouTube lectures and even attending a live event at Chicago Theater on 12 Rules for Life Tour. As someone who resonates with is his message, it was nice to see a higher level of perspective on who Jordan is. We see those who don't resonate with his message but also how his family has adapted to this surge in fame. Humans are complicated, and it's hard to put anyone into just one category, and Jordan is no exception if anything Jordan Peterson has a deep-seated resistance to ideological thinking. If he senses ideological thinking at all, then he pushes you on your assumptions. Regardless of your views of Peterson, this is worth checking out.
'I don't feel like I'm going to slip into that abyss and I think that the abyss was a complete loss of identity. . .I think when you have questions about your identity, you don't know who you are. And on that point I would say what I've also realized is that identity is very much a compound of your relationship to others. And this is where I think it becomes a healing thing when you recognize that who you are is what you are to other people as well as who you want to be for yourself.' - Damon Hill from The Drive with Peter Attia
